Arabic for Non-Native Speakers

From the alphabet to reading with understanding

This course is for people who did not grow up speaking Arabic and want to read the Quran and understand what they are reading — not to pass an exam. We begin with the letters and their shapes in each position, move to joining and short vowels, then to fluent reading, and then to recognising the vocabulary and patterns that appear again and again in the Quran.

Why Quranic Arabic is a realistic goal

Conversational Arabic is a large undertaking. Quranic Arabic is more contained: a limited vocabulary carries most of the text, and the same root patterns repeat constantly. Learn those patterns and large parts of the meaning open up at once. We focus on that core rather than on everything at once, which is why students see progress sooner than they expect.

Taught in English, one-to-one

Grammar is explained in plain English, with the Arabic terminology introduced gradually. Because lessons are one-to-one, the pace follows you: if a concept has not landed, we stay on it, and if it is obvious we move on rather than filling time.

Adults welcome, beginners especially

Many of our students are adults who feel they have left it too late. They have not. Starting as an adult has real advantages — you can understand grammatical explanations a child cannot, and you are choosing to be there. There is no shame in starting at the first letter. Most people do.
